Chen Li Sheng and Nguyen Thi Thanh Truc (2nd and 3th from left) at their wedding ceremony in 2003
Photo: Nguoi Lao DongThe police in Taoyuan, Taiwan, have arrested Chen Li Sheng for killing his 29-year-old Vietnamese wife, Pham Thi Thanh Truc, and throwing her body into the sea 6 days ago.

The arrest of Sheng was made at 10 pm on December 26, 2 days after local residents found Truc’s body floating in the sea near Taoyuan, where Sheng and his wife had been living, Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper reported.

According to the police, Truc got married to Sheng, a taxi driver, through a broker in 2003. The couple has 2 daughters, 5 and 6 years old.

Sheng often picked quarrels with Truc and beat her since she could not give birth to a boy. Suffering from domestic violence, Truc had asked for protection from local authorities 3 times, but Sheng continued to abuse her.

On December 22, the couple arrived at a local court for divorce procedures. Later on the same day, Sheng strangled Truc to death and then tied a piece of rock to her neck before throwing her body into the sea.

Calling for help

Yesterday afternoon Pham Thi Hoa, Truc’s sister, came to Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper’s headquarter in Ho Chi Minh City to ask for help.

A reporter then took Hoa to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in HCMC for assistance.

Lin Chen Chou, an official at the office, said he had been informed of the tragedy and was working with the HCMC Foreign Affairs Department and the Vietnamese Economic and Cultural Office in Taiwan to handle the case.

The office asked Hoa to submit a report on the incident to the HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs, asking the agency for assistance in going to Taiwan to receive and repatriate Truc’s body.

The office will grant a visa to the representative of Truc’s family right after the person obtains a passport, Lin said.

In Truc’s case, the Taiwanese Committee for Compensation to Criminal Victims is likely to help in demanding compensation, Lin said.

“We are very sorry,” he said.

An aborted dream

Hoa told Nguoi Lao Dong that in a conversation with her from Taiwan, Truc had said tearfully, “I accepted the marriage only because I wanted to help our family, but now, I’d rather die than live in such a terrible situation…”

Truc got married to Sheng with the hope that she could save money to build a house for her parents, who have been long living on a boat.

But Sheng gave her family just VND5 million (US$238) as payment for the wedding held in HCMC, Hoa said.

After Truc left Vietnam, her family incurred a debt of VND2 million which they had spent on her wedding ceremony, Hoa said.

When Truc arrived in Taiwan, she knew that her husband’s family was poor too and had to live in a rented house.

During her 9 years in Taiwan, Truc returned to Vietnam twice and had no money to buy any gift for her family.

In one of the two occasions, she had to borrow VND4 million from an acquaintance in Vietnam to buy a necklace as a present for her mother, Hoa said.

and this sad news today too..i saw the news on TV last week - Vietnamese worker fatally hit by train in Taiwan
Last updated: 12/27/2011 11:00

A Vietnamese worker who had arrived in Taiwan barely a week earlier was fatally hit by a train while being chased by a group of drunk Taiwanese nationals last month, the Chinese-language Liberty Times reported on Dec 24.

On Nov 29, the worker, whose last name is Nguyen, and three Vietnamese friends went to a karaoke parlor in Tainan City.

They left the parlor at 11 p.m. and encountered a group of Taiwanese men. Nguyen happened to look at a Taiwanese woman wearing a short skirt stepping into a car.

A Taiwanese man began yelling at Nguyen because he thought Nguyen had deliberately looked at his wife’s underpants.

Nguyen, who could not speak Chinese, used his hands to explain he had not done so, but the Taiwanese group, under the influence of alcohol, began to attack him.

According to police, eight Taiwanese men chased Nguyen for around 100 meters. Nguyen dashed across a railway track on the way despite hearing a train whistle.

He was hit by the train, which was traveling at 130km/h.

Police arrested the Taiwanese men after seeing the scenes captured by a camera at the accident site.

The men told police they had tried to call Nguyen and ask him to come back when they saw the train, but Nguyen kept running.

They admitted chasing after him but denied beating him.

Police have charged the men with manslaughter, according to the Liberty Times.

Nguyen had arrived in Taiwan just eight days before the incident.

hix..so sad! i know that my country is poor, that's a reason why almost vietnamese women agree to marry with foreign men like taiwan..., because of only her family. And psychology of almost those men isn't normal.

Dec 28, 2011 Like anyone taking a vacation, FACEBOOK CRO Mark Zuckerberg wanted to escape his every-day life. And he did: hopping to Vietnam, a country where Facebook is illegal. And he's doing what any rich dude looking for a break would do: buying fantasies.

Let's Play The Amazing Race

Normal Amazing Race hopefuls shoot a shoddy YouTube video and assume they'll never hear back. Rich people make their own version of the show. Zuck, girlfriend Priscilla Chan and friends played an "Amazing Race style game" according to Gizmodo's Sam Biddle:

The pals, divided into teams, partook in traditional Tet holiday fun like "blindfolded goat-catching," "pole-climbing," and other feats of dominance. And now, close your eyes and imagine Mark Zuckerberg trying to catch a Vietnamese goat while blindfolded.

Considering there is no traveling involved, this sounds more Real-World/Road-Rules Challenge: The Gauntlet-esque to us. But rich dudes do what they want.

Let's Take as Many Modes of Transportation as We Can Think of

To get from one location to another, Zuck and his gaggle have opted for various means of transport throughout the vacation. After flying into Hanoi in December 22, they took a chartered helicopter, which the Vietnamese Website Tuoitre News says costs around $6,400 per trip to Ha Long Bay, and spent the day on a junk cruise ship and kayaking. They then flew (helicopter, private jet, hot-air balloon?) to Sapa, where Zuckerberg rode a buffalo (pictured up top). Then they did some hiking (below), too, before the Amazing Race Spectacular. That's six modes of transportation. At least.

Let's Eat Exotic Foods

After their hike and Gauntlet games, the gang feasted on gourmet (mostly) vegetarian meals. Again, from Biddle:

Dinners

Grilled Fillet With Coconut With Barbecue Sauce
Fried Tofu With Tomato Sauce
Fried Egg With Sapa Mushroom
Sapa trout carpaccio with shallot and lemon oil
Grilled pork and apple skewers with Sapa honey (Don't touch that, Mark!)
Sapa mushroom risotto
Eggplant, tomato and onion gratin

Lunch

Cucumber Salad
Fried Shrimp vegetable
Fried Channa Maculata Fish
Potato with Cheese

Desserts

Baked pear and cinnamon crumble
Creme caramel
Gingerbread pudding
Rice pudding with Strawberry sauce

Zuck's not even a vegetarian. But considering he can get delicious everything he wants in the Bay Area, for the Facebook founder, this counts as a culinary experience -- Biddle's sources say it's a bet with Chan.

Let's Sure as Hell Not Go on Facebook

Some have suggested that Zuck's using this excursion as a hybrid business-pleasure trip, spending some of his visit to talk Vietnam into opening to social network up legally. However, a Facebook spokesperson told The Wall Street Journal that this trip is "strictly personal." And even with the government ban, the social network still ranks as the second-most popular in the country, as this ComScore chart The Next Web dug up shows. Besides, it looks like Zuck's too busy riding buffalo to talk business.

LÊ NGỌC ANH THƯ said...

oh..i'm so sr, i dont know that you have the phobia of flying. It's a good idea , travelling all over the work by internet! ^_____________^ hehe . And i'm happy to be your friend :)

i can ask personal question ? When was your accident? What was happening? if this question 's so graceless, i'm so sr, just curious but i dont want to make you sad again

And i proud of you! you know why? b/c you are optimistic and happy now 1000000 % after your terrible airplane accident.me2, i still wanna live all of my heart althought i have many troubles in my life now...

As you, the biggest phobia of Vietnamese peoples is the war, the unhappy life. You know, the vietnamese people went through uncountable years of war...but they never give up..i love my country^^

DANIELBLOOM said...

Dear friend in Vietnam,

I hear you, I hear you! Life is not easy and nobody ever said life was supposed to be easy, and in fact, life is hard. I am a survivor, so i know a little bit about life and death, not much, but a little. Thanks for understanding my phobia.

The accident wwas on June 26, 1983, and it was a clear sunny day, i was on a small DC-3 propeller airplane with 25 other passengers, one pilot and one stewardess, for a short 40 minute flight from one small town to the next. But when we were high up in the air, maybe 10,000 feet, no clouds, just clear blue sky beautiful day, i was so happy, and then SUDDENLY I noticed sparks and flames coming out of the engine near my window and i told the stewardess adn she told the pilot and then he said DEAR PASSENGERS WE HAVE A LEFT ENGINE ON FIRE, PREPARE TO CRASH.....oh that was a terrible moment, i thoguht i would die there and then....BUT, miracles do happen, and the pilot was a good pilot and with just one engine working on the right side, he steered the plane down to the ground and we all clapped our hands and said BRAVO and i kissed the ground when i got off the plane....O LIFE

yes, even when we have bad things in life, it is important to keep optimistic about life, so i am even more happier than before, becacuse i really value my life every day, i am lucky to be alive now.....and i know it...i saw DEATH outside my window and it was not a pretty picture....

and yes, you in Vietnam you saw the war so terrible, my heart goes out to you too. please tell me more about your troubles. email me if private at danbloom AT gmail DOT com

WAR IS TERRIBLE. The French, the Americans, they never should have made war in Vietnam. They were wrong to do that. SIGH

and yes, the key now today is NEVER GIVE UP, remain optimistic, build a new country, a new post-war country, a new Vietnam that can bloom and flower yes yes yes.
